This year's workshop was conducted on 13 May in Seoul, with almost 50 participants representing governing ministries and agencies. ![]() GIR opened the session with a welcome address by Min-ji Choi, President of GIR, followed by Hyung-wook Choi, Director of GHG Inventory Team giving a recap of the first Technical Expert Review of ROK's 1st Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) and 2024 National Inventory Report (NIR), as well as the preliminary verification results from the initial round of emissions data submitted in March. ![]() Speakers from key agencies—including the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS), Korea Energy Agency (KEA), National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (NAS), National Institute of Ecology (NIE), and Korea Environment Corporation (K-ECO) shared the latest updates on progress and areas for improvement on major challenges identified in the <Third National Masterplan for GHG Inventory Management (2025-2029)>. Presentations delivered by the speakers covered: - transition to Tier 3 methodology (road transportation) - advanced methodologies for estimating emissions from ODS substitutes - estimation of soil organic carbon sequestration in cropland - land-cover change matrix aligned with national MRV guidelines - development of conversion factors for industrial wastewater emissions The afternoon session continued with breakout discussions of GIR, agencies, and governing ministries to focus on pending issues that were not yet addressed during the verification process. The workshop provided an invaluable opportunity to every compiler of the national GHG inventory to discuss and identify areas that require further consideration and revision for submission of the second draft of emissions which is due early June. |
