DAILY JOURNAL FOR 3RD AUGUST, 2022
BY: ACHIMUGU JULIET CHENEMI
NIGERIA

It was a rainy, cold, comfortable weather to learn. Trainees were admonished to be extra cautious and take good care of themselves because of the sharp increase of COVID-19 cases.

The schedule started today at 9:00am with the 1st Lecture (virtual) from Mr Enoki Takeshi. The lecture was on the Basics of National Inventory Report.

He started by reviewing the previous day exercise, if our countries met the requirements for the submission of BUR and BTR.
Few trainees indicated that their country met the requirements as explained by the trainer. He mentioned that when working on the BUR or BTR, you don’t start from the scratch, you start from the most recent country submission.
IPCC software is easy to understand but you need to have a basic understanding of the methods, so you need to use the guidelines.

He also said that if we’re to mitigate, we need to set reliable goals and to prepare the inventory, we need some guidelines.
Some of the areas Mr Enoki touched were:

⦁ National Arrangements (Challenges in developing countries, Arrangements of the GHG inventories, Roles and responsibilities, QA/QC plan, institutional arrangements, GHG inventory preparation cycle and Questions to ask during GHG inventory).
⦁ Tools and Manuals (useful tools, manuals & guidelines, the inventory software, Emission factor database, FAQ website, UNFCCC products and EPA Toolkit).
⦁ Cross cutting issues (Data sources & data consideration, Data collection tips and archiving)

During lectures, the trainer and trainees went through some exercises relating to National Inventory Report.

Coordinator's comments:
I am still (and will be) very grateful for kind understanding and cooperation of you and fellow trainees who made this whole programme a safely facilitated one.
I fully understand how challenging it is to focus on lectures taking every protective action like wearing masks and being extra cautious. Yet, everyone followed the Secretariat's instructions and still showed wonderful performance during lectures.
I am a very lucky coordinator to have you, Juliet, and others as this year's trainees.
You have very well indicated key takeaways from all three lectures which I find very useful and helpful.
I would be more than happy if you use what you learned from lectures on NIR, AFOLU and Adaptation in what you do in Nigeria.
